In honor of National Archaeology Day and Texas Archaeology month, the Maya Research Program and the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT) is proud to sponser a wonderful new exhibit re: Yaxunah, Mexico. Dr.Grace Bascope, director of MRP's Yaxunah Ethnographic project, notes: "There’s going to be an exhibit of photographs at the gallery at BRIT (Botanical Research Institute of Texas) in Fort Worth, Texas from October 6th to October 26th. The show will feature photographs taken by Maya children in the village of Yaxunah, Yucatán. Long time MRP volunteer and acclaimed photographer, Dr. Becky Watson, developed an experiential learning module that included teaching English along with teaching the children to explore light vs. shadow and composition with their donated cameras. The exhibit at BRIT will feature the best works of the children of Yaxunah. Becky will also have some of her best Yucatán shots in the display, as well as will Grace Bascopé, the MRP Director of México Projects.

BRIT is in it’s new home, a LEED Platinum building on the north end of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden grounds. The building itself, with its huge herbarium of more than 1,000,000 plant specimens and a living roof is worth a trip to Cowtown.

All the photographs in the gallery, printed on archival quality paper and framed will be for sale. There will also be embroidery work made by the women of the village and carved wooden masks made by the men. The proceeds will go back into buying other pieces from the Yaxunah crafters."
