International Archaeology Day
Spokane Society of the AIA
The Spokane Society of the AIA is excited to announce our activities for International Archaeology Day. Our celebration will include a number of activities over two days. Our events involve the collaboration among several departments and institutions, and will be tailored for and directed towards different audiences.
Thursday, October 17 – Archaeological Fair for students K-6
On Thursday, October 17, we will conduct an Archaeological Fair aimed at students in grades K-6. This event will be hosted by the Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC), in Spokane’s historic Browne’s Addition, and will be held in their History Classroom.
This event is jointly organized and presented by Professor Kathleen Huttenmaier and Dr. Bonny Bazemore. Professor Huttenmaier is the Senior Associate in History and Women's Studies, Eastern Washington University.
Archaeological Fair Events:
The students will give be given a short, age appropriate, Power Point introduction introducing the science and methodology of archaeology.
Then we allow the students to indulge in their inner Indiana Jones and become an archaeologist for a day! We have devised our own mythical village with its various locations, such as a home, a temple, an army barracks. Students will be then be presented their own excavation squares in the form of a sand-filled container or box. Each container holds objects suggestive of the purpose of the excavation square. As students find these objects, they are encouraged to analyze their meaning and identify the function of their square. In each excavation team, we will have a student to record the finds and their position in the grid.
We are able to present two sessions of this archeology fair, from 9:30 – 11:30 and from 11:30-1:30. We will serve snacks for the students as well during this fun and educational activity.
The Spokane Society is very excited to participate once again in the International Archaeology Day of the Archaeological Institute of America!
