Wagner College Spiro Sports Center main gymnasium
One Campus Road
Staten Island, NY 10301
The Archaeology Society of Staten Island and local chapter of the Archaeology Institute of America (AIA) are excited to announce the first Archaeology Fair to be held this spring on the campus of Wagner College. The fair is open to the public and designed to increase awareness of the fields of archaeology, historic preservation, and global anthropology, especially among children and families. The fair is modeled on those held at the annual AIA meetings, where such interactive programming has been hugely successful.
The Fair will be free and open to the public, and will feature an array of informative, fun, and interactive programming. Stations will be set up in the Wagner College Spiro Sports Center main gymnasium, where programs and activities will be presented by archaeologists, historians, museum educators and interpreters, all from organizations in the greater New York City area. Wagner College students will serve as ambassadors and take participants on a book and craft tour of ancient and global cultures, such as Mayan and Egyptian. Through a mock archaeological excavation participants can search for and discover their own ‘artifacts!’ Many other exciting activities will be available for explorers of all ages: Three-dimensional modeling and computer games about ancient societies and global cultures, informal talks about local archaeological sites here on Staten Island, authentic artifact displays from a variety of archaeological and anthropological sites, and much more. Come and speak to someone from the past: a mummy or a Viking or a settler from Staten Island! Discover your family origins! Learn how to preserve your favorite tree! Try your hand at Roman sword play! All children who attend the Fair will leave with a goody bag of archaeological treasure!
We look forward to a wonderful day of learning and fun. Please consider sponsoring a station or funding the mock excavation. Your generous support will be most appreciated!
