Project Description

The Material Culture Field School investigates the excavated finds from the Roman river port of Rusellae, in particular the finds from the ateliers of bone-, metal- and glass-artisans active in the workshop complex.

The primary component of the course is training in handling, recording and analysis of artifacts and objects. Subjects covered include the handling, recording, and primary conservation of excavated finds, as well as cataloguing and drawing of individual objects.

Seminars and practical learning projects led by specialist will introduce students to the identification and study of particular materials and objects: ceramics, glass, metal objects, bone, and numismatics material.

This is complemented by studies of excavation methodologies for a nuanced interpretation of archaeological data.

The course is enhanced by visits to other archaeological sites and museums in the area for a contextual appreciation of the artifacts and of museological approaches to archaeological displays.
