Abstract: The Parthenon and Periklean Politics

In the wake of my book on the Parthenon frieze, I have begun to investigate the new elements in the Parthenon’s sculptural program and how they might relate to some of Perikles’ legislation, namely the Citizenship Law, the increase in the size of the cavalry, and jury pay.  This lecture begins with an overview of the Parthenon and its decoration and demonstrates how the new themes depicted here can be related to specific policies of Perikles.
