The University of Alabama's Moundville Archaeological Park is the second largest Mississippian Indian ceremonial mound center in America. At its height, it was the largest city north of Mexico and contained some 30 flat-topped, rectangular earthen mounds. Ancient rulers and thousands of their subjects thrived within this city behind huge wooden walls. Mississippian society recognized nobles by birth and praised the feats of great artists, warriors and holy people. Read more »
