For thousands of years, the Black Sea has been a scenic crossroads for the rich and varied cultures of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, the vast steppes of Russia, and central and southwest Asia. In the company of archaeologist Kathleen Lynch, explore ancient Greco-Roman ruins, Byzantine churches, Ottoman monuments, and much more as you learn about the Black Sea region’s complex history—from the ancient Greeks to the Ottomans, Russian Tsars, Stalin, and beyond. Begin your adventure with two hotel nights in glorious Istanbul, which straddles the continents of Europe and Asia, and then embark Aegean Odyssey to cruise to ports in Georgia, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, and Bulgaria.

The original cruise itinerary, which appears in the brochure available for download below, included several ports of call in Crimea, Ukraine. In the time since that brochure was produced, the political situation in Crimea has continued to develop on a daily basis, and the ship operator has developed an alternate itinerary that no longer includes ports of call in the Crimean peninsula. In the revised itinerary, not only will we be visiting three sites that were not represented on the original itinerary (Sinop, Turkey; Constanta, Romania; and Varna, Bulgaria), as well as spending an extra day in elegant Odessa, but also we will be completing our circumnavigation by calling in Romania, the one Black Sea country that was not on the original itinerary. We feel that these adjustments maintain the comprehensive, educational, and well-balanced nature of this itinerary that remains focused on the diverse culture and history of the Black Sea region.
