Join archaeologist Joan Breton Connelly for a seven-night cruise aboard the original, four-masted, 32-cabin yacht Sea Cloud and explore many historical “turning points” and iconic ancient sites between Istanbul and Athens. Beginning with a night in Istanbul, delve into the history of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires with visits to Hagia Sophia, the Hippodrome, and the Blue Mosque. Then, embark the peerless Sea Cloud, the epitome of sea-going luxury and sophistication, and cruise to Troy, backdrop for the battle in Homer’s epic Iliad; Assos, whose 6th-century B.C. Temple of Athena is integral to our understanding of Greek temple architecture; and on to northern Greece to explore Philippi and Vergina, homeland of the ancient Macedonian dynasty of Philip II and Alexander the Great. Cruise onward to Athens, for visits to the plain of Marathon and to the beautiful Greek temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Stay on for an optional, two-night extension in Athens, specially designed with and accompanied by Professor Connelly.
