Tour Leader: Barry Strauss
On this eleven-day cruise from Athens to Nice aboard the 57-cabin, all-suite Island Sky, accompanied by AIA guest lecturer and host Barry Strauss, you will be amidst the beauty of the Mediterranean’s land-and seascapes in springtime, delve into the region’s political, strategic, and cultural histories during daily excursions as well as informal lectures and discussions aboard ship, particularly during our two relaxing days at sea.
Visit fascinating archaeological sites, including the Acropolis in Athens; legendary Troy; Sicily’s Syracuse, Piazza Armerina, and Agrigento; Malta’s Hagar Qim and Tarxien; and Italy’s Ostia Antica. Explore museums rich in ancient treasures, such as Athens’ new Acropolis Museum, whose glass floor allows visitors to view the site over which it is built; the Ca nakkale Archaeological Museum, exhibiting artifacts from Troy and other nearby sites; and Marsala’s Regional Archaeological Museum Baglio Anselmi, which houses the earliest known Punic warship and incorporates the adjacent archaeological site of Insula Romana. You will also have opportunities to visit a variety of sites where ancient and 20th-century military operations and naval battles changed the course of history, including Gallipoli, Preveza (where the Battle of Actium took place), and Nettuno (marking WWII’s Operation Shingle).
