Meeting Place of Empires: A Voyage from Venice to Istanbul
Dates: September 22, 2013 - October 3, 2013
(14 Days)
Tour Leader: Andrew M.T. Moore
We invite you to join AIA lecturer/host Andrew Moore on a grand voyage from Venice to Istanbul, exploring this fascinating corner of the world that for thousands of years has been a crossroads, where the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and others all left their mark on the cultures, arts, and architecture of the region. And, in recent times, some of the countries that occupy this strategic part of Europe have been at the center of conflict as world powers continue to contend for influence and control. Early autumn, when days are still warm but summer crowds have gone, is an ideal time to experience the region’s beauty and charm. In addition to admiring such itinerary highlights as the wonderfully preserved medieval towns of Mostar and Kotor; the rich Byzantine and Christian heritage of Thessaloniki; and the vast Palace of Diocletian at Split; you will witness the rich legacies of multiple civilizations at Dubrovnik, home to marvelous examples of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture; Sardis, where the ruins of an ancient Greek temple are found next to a 4th-century synagogue; and Butrint, whose ruins span some 2,500 years and include Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman monuments. The destinations, the ship, the accompanying lecturers, and the opportunity to hear one of the world’s great sopranos perform in private recitals all combine to make this a journey you will not want to miss.
