Returning to the field this summer? Then it’s a good idea to take a look at your code of conduct and make sure you have an updated harassment statement.
Field projects should promote an environment of collaboration, trust, safety, and mutual respect. While in the field, it’s important to be aware of potential situations related to harassment and sexual assault and to develop the solutions necessary to avoid them at all costs. Rigorous fieldwork is challenging enough without having to endure the pain and trauma of harassment and sexual assault. Each field project should have a working plan for how to address harassment and sexual assault issues, should they arise. With so many projects returning to the field after two years away, we want to remind you of our Statement on Sexual Harassment and Assault and Guidelines for Archaeological Field Projects. This statement, published in 2019, lays out the expectations for equitable, respectful, and socially responsible practice in the field. It also offers guidance for adjudication in the unfortunate event that harassment or sexual assault does occur.
