Project Description:

The Etrusco-Umbrian necropolis of the Vallone di San Lorenzo was first excavated in 1855 by Domenico Golini, and work continued in the mid twentieth century and later by the archaeological superintendency, with more recent excavations in 2017, 2019 and 2022. Around 50 chamber tombs have been discovered to date; a remarkable tomb built from travertine blocks was discovered in 2019, and other unusual tombs in the vicinity of it were discovered in 2022. We will continue to explore this area of the necropolis in 2023.

Period(s) of Occupation: The necropolis dates between the late seventh/early sixth century B.C. to the fourth century B.C.

Notes:
Italian and American university students will be working together at the site. Participants will be trained in excavation techniques and recording methods, and learn about the site history. They will also work with artifacts from the current or previous seasons in the local museum.

Room and Board Arrangements:
€ 2,800 The fee includes accommodation, food, and daily transport between Montecchio and the excavation site. Airfare, and health/travel insurance are not included (proof of medical insurance required). Accommodation: All participants will be staying in lodging near the town of Montecchio (a short distance from the excavation site). Rooms and bathrooms will be shared. Most meals will be prepared together, except on the weekends. Excavation will take place Monday through Friday. Participants are encouraged to travel on the weekends (Rome, Florence and other popular destinations are accessible on public transportation); weekend travel expenses are not included in the fee. Please inform us about any dietary restrictions or medical problems when applying. Required: appropriate clothes for excavation work in hot, sunny weather (loose fitting shirts with sleeves, long pants, gloves, hat with brim; steel-toed work shoes or boots in particular are required).
