Project Description:
The Blackfriary Archaeological Field School 2018 summer research programme will focus on archaeological excavations in Co. Meath, Ireland; excavations will be undertaken at the Black Friary (Trim) from 18th June to 27th July 2018. The Black Friary was once an influential and thriving religious (Dominican) house in the then Anglo-Norman Lordship of Trim. The site was almost completely razed to the ground in the 18th century, however ongoing investigation is slowly revealing the extent of the survival of the below ground remains including cemeteries and later unsanctioned burials. This greatly adds to our understanding of the significance of this site both during its lifetime as a friary, and the use of the site by the native populations following its destruction. While much work has been carried out to date, we are only at the tip of the ‘archaeological iceberg’. Plans for the upcoming 2018 investigations include extending into the area of the monastic gardens to assess the subsistence strategies of the community. Having confirmed the presence of a second or outer cloister to the north of the first we now know that this friary was one of the largest in Ireland. We will continue to further explore the use of the site by the local Catholic population as an expression of native resistance in Post-Dissolution Ireland. Students are invited to apply to the school to undertake a number of field archaeology courses including Introduction to Field Archaeology, Advanced Methods in Field Archaeology and Introduction to Bioarchaeology.

Since 2010 students at the Blackfriary Archaeology Field School have taken part in a wide range of expert led research focused courses which introduce them to practical field methods, and build on knowledge and experience gained in the classroom in a friendly and supportive environment. Courses are ideal for students of anthropology, archaeology, history, medieval studies, bioarchaeology, forensic anthropology, Irish studies and community archaeology. Whatever you are studying, you will engage in a thoroughly rewarding and culturally enriching study abroad experience that will take you out of your comfort zone and greatly enhance your CV.
