Project Description:
The Cerro Sechín Field School will take place in Peru from May 22 to June 25, 2023. It includes 31 days of archaeological field research at the site of Cerro Sechín in Peru’s Casma River valley. Archaeological research will take place within the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológico Sechín (hereafter, “the Project”) sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Yaguar Institución Cultural Deportivo del Peru and directed by Licenciada Mónica Suárez and Dr. David Pacifico. As part of the field school students will have the opportunity to visit multiple archaeological sites and to participate in field research at Cerro Sechín. Field research at that site is divided into two components: excavations at the Formative Period Temple of Cerro Sechín; and noninvasive methods at the surrounding later-period sites located on the mountain of Cerro Sechín. Students will also participate in 3 site cleanups and community dinners. If possible, we will visit a complementary archaeological site while in Lima and en route to Casma.
Period(s) of Occupation: Formative period, Peru; Late Intermediate Period, Peru.
Notes:
This field school provides portable, marketable skill and content learning opportunities for students interested in a wide range of disciplines, majors, and graduate programs including Archaeology, Art History, Anthropology, Latin American Studies (CLACS/LACUSL), History, Geography, GIS, Heritage and Museum Studies, Architecture and related fields. We limit the group to 12 students to ensure a high student/supervisor ratio. We have a great location, good amenities, and a well-structured curriculum in experiential learning.
There is no language requirement and there are no prerequisites. Students from any university are welcome.
Students will be fully emersed in Peruvian culture and language for the entirety of the program. We will work with local experts, residents, businesses, and cultural institutions to complete our work studying the ancient residents of the area and their ways of life. Students will have about 450 hours of direct contact learning either through structured instruction, supervised practice, or immersive interactions in a provincial Peruvian city and its premier archaeological site. This field school is offered for 6 credits and financial aid is available.
