Project Description:

Discover this fascinating world of the past by joining the team of the Caesarea City and Port Exploration Project, a large-scale, international excavation on the northern coast of Israel. Caesarea Maritima was a thriving hub of power and innovation and one of the largest ports on the eastern Mediterranean seaboard from the Roman Empire through the early centuries of the Islamic caliphates to the Crusades. This program is a unique opportunity to explore one of the world’s most spectacular seaside archaeological sites while digging alongside Herod’s great Temple in the heart of the ancient to medieval city. Participants learn about essential field techniques and interpretating evidence, including stratigraphic excavation and recording, architectural study, artifactual processing, and conservation. They also attend a series of seminars by experts in different fields, from Roman pottery to the natural environment, and join in excursions to major sites and cities.

Notes:
Total cost including room/board, program expenses, transport in Israel: $5,600. Airfare to and from Tel Aviv and incidental expenses not included.

Room and Board Arrangements:
The team stays at the comfortable Sea Center of the kibbutz Sdot Yam along the shore near Caesarea in a safe and beautiful resort district with many amenities.

Academic Credit:
Enroll in summer course through Rhodes College and receive a transcript for 6 credits
