Project Description:

Excavations in 2019 will focus on the area of the baths, a house with peristyle, and a macellum, where our understanding of late antique Aeclanum is increasing rapidly. Students will be exposed both to monumental Roman architecture and rich finds of associated materials, including marble, as well as to late antique interventions which have left behind a fascinating record of both remodelling and spoliation. This is a fantastic and rare opportunity for any student who wants to develop an understanding of how an excavation starts, from the ground up, and experience the complexity of dealing with Roman urban stratigraphy. A combination of survey and excavation provides a well-rounded archaeological experience, while additional opportunities for working on ceramics and marble finds will be provided.

In addition to the excavations, participants in the Aeclanum project can also sign up for training in geophysical prospection with a focus on GPR, and osteoarchaeology. These courses are run by specialists and start at the end of the excavation season so that participants can join both the excavation field school and one of these more specialist courses.

Experience Required: No previous archaeological fieldwork is required to attend. We will be requiring at least one academic referee listed in the application in addition to your most recent academic cv.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Accommodation is provided in the local town, Passo di Mirabella, a hostel-like situation walking distance to the site. To keep prices down as much as possible we will provide cooking facilities rather than set meals. Participants can buy food in the town and cook it themselves or eat out at the local restaurants. Cost: The cost of participation will be 50EUR (roughly 400GBP or 510USD) for 2 weeks, 800EUR for 4 weeks, 1000EUR for 6 weeks.
