Project Description:

The Michigan Tech 2024 Archaeology Field School will be based at the Delaware Mine historic site, a coordinating site of the Keweenaw National Historical Park in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Delaware Mine, a 19th century copper mine, features a wide array of both historic structures and is also located on a prehistoric copper mining site.

Open to both undergraduate and graduate students, this 7-week field school will explore both prehistoric and historic mining remains at the Delaware Mine. All students will have opportunities to participate in every aspects of the archaeological fieldwork: survey – both digital and pedestrian, site mapping, excavation, field lab work, and public education. Along with work at Delaware the crew may also spend a portion of the field school performing archaeological survey and testing work at several other nearby sites in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. No previous archaeological experience is necessary.

Experience Required: No previous archaeological experience required.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Lodgings for the full 7 weeks will be provided in the form of one or more group rental properties (including bathrooms, common spaces, kitchen, patio, and shared bedrooms) a short drive from the field school work site. Daily transportation to and from the site will be provided. Parking for private vehicles is available. Food will also be provided (prepared and served as a group)

Academic Credit:
Two courses are included in the field school: Archaeology Field Methods (Variable credits, 6 recommended) [a graduate student version of this course also available] Public Archaeology (3 credits) Check with your academic advisor to ensure offered credits are are accepted by your institution / degree program
