Archaeological Institute of America Supports U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield Statement on the Destruction of Syria’s Cultural Heritage
As the armed conflict and resulting destruction of objects representing the heart of Syria’s cultural heritage continues, the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) joins with the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield in reminding the Syrian government of its political obligations to avoid targeting of cultural sites. The AIA supports all efforts to preserve and protect irreplaceable cultural treasures across the world that are being threatened today.
We at the AIA strongly support the statement of the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, that “It is particularly the responsibility of both the Syrian regime and the rebel forces to honor international law and the interests of the Syrian people in preserving their shared cultural heritage.”
