The Rooms will be holding a special celebration on October 19th to showcase the local archaeology of Newfoundland and Labrador. Organizations such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Archaeology Office, the Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeology Society, the Newfoundland and Labrador Shipwreck Preservation Society, and the Memorial University Department of Archaeology will be hosting events at The Rooms to highlight the historical research being done in the province. Events for all ages will include information booths, a flint-knapping demonstration, a mock dig open to the public, an atlatl toss on the lawn (weather permitting) and an “Ask the Expert” table.
The Center for Ancient Studies and Archaeology of Willamette University, Oregon is joining the ranks of collaborating organizations. In conjunction with Salem’s AIA society, they will help to promote historical awareness at their local community events and fairs with flyers, email, posters, and press releases highlighting their archaeological work.
The Historical Odessa Foundation of Odessa, Delaware will be hosting “The Corbit Tannery – A Delaware Industry Lost in Time” on International Archaeology Day. The presentation will emphasize the importance of tanneries in colonial Delaware and describes what a tannery might have looked like. The recent historical research and the current effort to locate the lost Corbit Tannery through archaeological methods will be discussed.
The Virtual Curation Laboratory of Virginia Commonwealth University and the Alexandria Archaeology Museum are combining to host two events to highlight forward-thinking archaeological research. A presentation and lecture by Dr. Bernard K. Means of the Virtual Curation Laboratory, and later a student archaeology fair at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.
The New Smyrna Museum of History will be presenting a series of talks concerning archaeology and local Floridian sites on October 29th. Sarah Miller, of Florida Public Archaeology Network-Northeast region, will present a talk on “Fantastic Archaeology: Florida Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries”. Other historians and archaeologist will lecture on the 29th. These talks are part of New Smyrna Beach’s Founders Day celebration, which begins October 28th and ends November 3rd.
