In tandem with International Archaeology Day, Massachusetts will be celebrating Massachusetts Archaeology Month 2013 this October. Begun in 1992 as Archaeology Week, this year will mark the state’s 22nd annual celebration. Museums, local historical societies, libraries, avocational archaeologists, universities, and professional archaeologists have planned 95 events in 48 cities and towns across the Bay State. Go behind the scenes in an archaeology lab, take a field trip to a site, or attend an illustrated talk – there are events to suit every interest.
Event highlights include a discussion on “Reclaiming the Wampanoag Language” in Acton, MA, a “Laboratory Open House and Artifact Identification” at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, MA, updates from this summer’s excavations in Plymouth, MA, and a “Bike Tour of the Middlesex Canal.” And of course don’t forget the AIA’s annual Archaeology Fair at Boston’s Museum of Science. While at the museum you can even stop in and see the Dead Sea Scrolls!
There are lots of opportunities to explore Massachusetts archaeological past in October, but remember that many institutions have events year-round.
