The Cahokia Archaeological Society will be hosting Dr. Duane Esarey of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey at the Cahokia Mounds Museum in Collinsville, Illinois on October 17th. He will present a talk entitled ‘Untangling the Piasa’s Tale: A Revised Interpretation’. The discussion will be aimed at new insights into the meaning of the Piasa painted image on the rock bluff at Alton, Illinois.
The Poverty Point State Historic Site will be the site of a moon-lit hike on October 19. At dusk, a ranger will guide participants through the park’s prehistoric mounds on a two mile hike, highlighting the site’s history and culture. At Mound A, visitors will have the opportunity to star gaze and get a bird’s-eye view of the site at night. The hike will include storytelling and roasted marshmallows around a campfire.
The Anthropology class of Eldorado High School, Albuquerque, NM will be organizing a scavenger hunt for their school on October 18th. The scavenger hunt is thematically based around New Mexico’s archaeological sites. Students on campus will be invited to take part by examining exhibits, playing games, and visiting websites in order to answer questions on the scavenger hunt. Those that finish will win prizes.
Gipri Colombia has joined on as a collaborating organization. On October 19th they will be hosting tours to the rock art sites of Cundinamarca, Colombia for the Lasmac 2013 participants. Later in the month, on October 23rd, the group will be visiting the archaeological park in Facatativá Cundinamarca to present the current research on the rock art there.
On October 17th, the Archaeological Associates of Grenwich will be hosting Professor Elizabeth Klarich at the Bruce Museum. She will be speaking on “Excavations, Archives & Artisans: 21st Century Archaeology in the Lake Titicaca Basin”
