Project Description:
The Bronze Age settlement of Petroto belongs to the regional unit of Trikala in Thessaly, Central Greece. It reverses the established theories of the center and the periphery regarding the proliferation of the political-economic model during the Late Bronze Age, known as the «Mycenaean Civilization». Until now, the archaeological investigation has revealed a series of rectangular, megaron-type, buildings, as well as parts of apsidal structures, and a number of graves scattered among these structures. Kylices, hydriai, alabaster jars and pithamphorae are the most common pottery shapes found. The majority of the ceramics are imported from Argolis, while some are local. Terracotta figurines, stone and bone tools, animal bone remains, spindle whorls, spools and loom weights round out the list of finds. Volunteers are welcome to participate in the excavation, study, and conservation work to be carried out in the field and in the laboratory of the Petroto Archaeological Project.
