2024 Waldbaum Scholar Spotlight: Sophia Andrade

The AIA sent ten students to the field this summer with $2000 Jane C. Waldbaum Field School Scholarships! This year’s cohort brought a wide variety of archaeological interests and academic backgrounds. Please join us in welcoming Sophia Andrade.

Name: Sophia Andrade (she/her)

School: New York University

Field School: Yeronisos Field Project, Cyprus

Miles Traveled: 5427.13 miles (about 8734.12 km)

Bio: Sophia Andrade, a rising senior at New York University will attend the Yeronisos Field Project in Cyprus this May. She’s especially excited about the opportunity to assist Professor Pieter Brouke on the cataloguing and interpreting of architectural blocks and moulding recovered from Yeronisos Island across 33 years.

The Yeronisos Island Expedition is a collaborative endeavor that undertakes the multidisciplinary investigation of Yeronisos Island using a broad range of methods, including archaeological survey and excavation, ecological survey and research, scientific analysis, mapping, collaborative projects, and outreach programs.

Long term goals for the project include creating an ecological/archaeological park on Yeronisos, establishing a local museum and cultural facilities, and developing an environmental/cultural footpath along Cyprus’s western coast. You can learn more about the project here.

Since its inception in 2007, the Waldbaum Fund has supported undergraduate juniors, seniors, and first-year graduate students as they venture into the field for the first time. The fund helps make it possible for them to participate in this vital part of their archaeological training by contributing to travel costs, accommodations, and tuition. Your contribution can make a significant difference for these young scholars.
