Congratulations to AIA Trustee Sarah Parcak (University of Alabama at Birmingham) for winning the prestigious 2016 TED Prize of $1 million to support her ongoing work to combat looting at archaeological sites. Such activity poses serious threats to cultural heritage, and has increased in regions of political unrest, including Egypt, Iraq, and Syria. To track which sites are being looted and to support international efforts to curtail black market sales of antiquities, Dr. Parcak has developed new ways of using satellite technology.
Learn more about Dr. Parcak’s work as featured in the New York Times, and mark your calendar for February 16, 2016, when she will present her new project at the annual TED Conference in a public online session.
