What Is International Archaeology Day?

International Archaeology Day is a day for organizations around the world to raise awareness of archaeology and provide opportunities for the public to participate in archaeological activities. Above all, International Archaeology Day is a celebration of archaeology and emphasizes the idea that archaeology is everywhere.

Join as a Collaborating Organization

Collaborating Organizations agree to hold events, participate in online activities such as #ArchaeoStart on social media or Listening Sessions, and/or promote International Archaeology Day to their members. Be sure to subscribe to our IAD newsletter for Collaborators and supporters to stay up to date on the latest participation opportunities.  Groups that sign up as long-term Collaborating Organizations will be listed on the International Archaeology Day website.

What Kind of Event should I Organize?

There are no limitations on the types of archaeology themed events that can be held in conjunction with International Archaeology Day, though events that are open and advertised to the public are preferable. Popular events include: archaeology fairs, lab open houses, classroom visits, special tours of museums or sites, symposia, conferences or meetings, student presentations, and lectures. See past events for more ideas.

Listing Your Event on the International Archaeology Day Calendar

A centralized calendar listing all events (on www.archaeologyday.org) will be maintained by the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA). All programs designated as an International Archaeology Day event may be listed on the calendar. To list your event, go to archaeological.org/events/community/add and be sure to select “Archaeology Day” as your event type.

Note: Events must be approved by a moderator before they appear on the website. Events will be approved within 2 business days.

Submitting Blog Articles

A lively International Archaeology Day blog will help raise the profile of the event and encourage participation. Collaborating Organizations may provide articles announcing events and significant updates to listed events. They are also required to provide a follow-up report post-event. Articles should be e-mailed to Dani Tutak.

Blogs should adhere to the following formatting rules:

  • Submissions should include between 1 and 5 images
  • The first sentence of the blog article should include the name of your organization and “International Archaeology Day.”
    • Examples:
      • The Denver and Boulder Chapters of the Archaeological Institute of America cosponsored an event that was hosted by Paleoresearch Institute Inc. for International Archaeology Day.
      • For the inaugural International Archaeology Day, Florida Public Archaeology Network staff around the state participated in a wide array of activities.
      • The AIA-Gainesville Society will be doing some community outreach on International Archaeology Day by staffing a table at a popular local library with information on how library patrons can get involved with the AIA and learn more about archaeology!
  • Minimum length: 3 sentences. Maximum length: 500 words.
  • If you are announcing or providing an update about an upcoming event, be sure to provide a link to the event’s listing on the International Archaeology Day calendar.

Online Participation

In order to expand the reach of International Archaeology Day, the AIA created online participation opportunities. In 2014 we began ArchaeoMadness and past activities have also included an online scavenger hunt and the introduction of a Google Earth layer showing popular archaeological sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.

If you have suggestions for other digital initiatives, please contact AIA Director of Programs Meredith Langlitz (mlanglitz@archaeological.org). Major additional components may depend on the AIA procuring a digital sponsor for International Archaeology Day.

Google Earth Layer

On International Archaeology Day 2011 the AIA unveiled a new Google Earth layer showing popular archaeological sites throughout the U.S. and Canada. We then asked the public to send us suggestions for other sites to be included on the map. In the future, we plan to release an expanded and enhanced map of sites in the U.S. and Canada based on the submissions we receive. Please note that all locations must be publicly accessible.

Explore the AIA’s Archaeology of America and Canada layer on Google Earth. (If you do not have it installed, please download Google Earth.)

Social Media

In addition to www.archaeologyday.org and the International Archaeology Day Blog, International Archaeology Day has a Facebook page ) and is on Twitter @ArchaeologyDay. Be sure to use the hashtag #IAD2024 when tweeting about International Archaeology Day!
