Diversity Student Travel Grants are meant to assist undergraduate or graduate students who qualify under the category of “underrepresented minority” with their travel expenses to attend the AIA Annual Meeting.

For the purposes of this grant, the category “underrepresented minority” may include (but is not limited to) members of historically underrepresented ethnic and racial minority groups in the United States and Canada, for example, African-American/Canadian, Latinx- American/Canadian, Native-American/First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Asian-American/Canadian, Caribbean-American/Canadian, and Pacific-Islander American/Canadian students. 

Fieldwork and Families

As part of the Archaeological Institute of America’s ongoing commitment to fieldwork and families, reasonable line items for the care of dependent and elderly family members are allowable expenses for AIA grants, fellowships, and scholarships.

Application Process

To submit an application for the Diversity Student Travel Grant we ask that you complete the online form below and include the required attachments.

1. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or Canada.
2. Applicants must submit a statement (250 words or fewer) that provides the reasons for applying and a statement of financial need
3. Submit proof of student status
4. Submit CV/resume
5. Submit transcript (an unofficial transcript released to student is sufficient)
6. Recommendation letter: The application must be supported by one letter of recommendation from an instructor or academic advisor that addresses the student’s qualifications and the value of travel to the AIA Annual Meeting to the student’s intellectual formation.

Candidates will be judged on the basis of:

1. their academic qualifications, including demonstrated commitment to and ability in archaeology or related fields;
2. financial need;
3. minority status as defined above.

Recipients of the Diversity Student Travel Grant will be given a complimentary student membership in the AIA for the year in which the Annual Meeting takes place. All students are encouraged to join the AIA as student members.
