Project Description:

The project involves the excavation of the funeral pantheon of the Cotrim family (Nossa Senhora da Piedade Chapel), where was buried Rui Cotrim who participated in the second fleet of Vasco da Gama to India and the medieval and modern necropolis (13th-18th century) associated with the Church of S. Jorge.

This is the follow up to the research that started in 2008, which, besides the identification of specific food as potatoes, also the fungus Candida albicans and parasites related to meat and contaminated water consumption in the past population of Sarilhos Grandes . Some of these constitute the most ancient findings of this sort in Portugal.

This interdisciplinary research project aims to collect new bioarchaeological data from the population of Sarilhos Grandes and to, by looking at historical sources, understand its relationships with the discovery of maritime route to India and the America continent.

Room and Board Arrangements:
The volunteers will be housed in Casa Europa, located in the center of Montijo, in double or quadruple rooms. The three main meals will be provided: breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will be covered by insurance.
