Project Description:

Transylvania Bioarchaeology, in collaboration with the Romanian Institute of Archaeology and Art History (Cluj-Napoca), are pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Jucu Necropolis Excavation and Bioarchaeology Field School! This field school is unique in that it trains all participants both in the excavation of human skeletal remains and the analyses on those individuals excavated through a research-led teaching framework. The course is taught in English by an international team of bioarchaeologists, forensic anthropologists, and archaeological specialists.

The field school also includes a one-of-a-kind, 5-day field trip through Transylvania, exploring the beautiful Transylvanian countryside, archaeological sites, cities, medieval churches, glacial lakes in the Carpathian Mountains, the bear sanctuary, and of course, trips to Dracula’s real castle and birthplace!

The application deadline date is rolling, however we do encourage early applications as we do reach capacity fairly quickly. Academic credit is available at no additional cost, subject to approval from the home university.

Transylvania Bioarchaeology is a registered, non-profit educational organization (nr. 8574673).

Experience Required: We are happy to train all individuals with a keen interest in bioarchaeology, no matter what their previous experience has been. For students with an advanced knowledge in the subject, we are able to cater to deeper levels of learning. We pride ourselves on a strong pedagogical foundation and believe the field school environment should be underscored by a research-led framework and structured teaching strategy, and not the labor of student volunteers to achieve others' independent research goals.

Room and Board Arrangements:
Accommodation in spacious double or triple occupancy rooms with amenities such as twice weekly maid service, television, in-room refrigerators, wifi, private kitchen, etc.  Cost: The cost of the accommodation and the 5-day field trip through Transylvania is included in the total field school price.

Academic Credit:
6 units (US) 230 scheduled learning and teaching hours (UK/EU) credits offered by Romanian Institute of Archaeology (or we're happy to work with your home institution).. Tuition is £3100.
