Lecture abstract: Between 2009 and 2012, the E/V Nautilus expeditions discovered and documented 30 shipwrecks in the deep waters of the southeast Aegean Sea. The historical periods of most of the shipwrecks were relatively easy to determine from the shape and styles of their ceramic cargoes. Ranging in date between the 6th century B.C.E. and the 12th century C.E., the wrecks are in various states of research and publication. Two of the shipwrecks are remarkable not for their size or even preservation, but for their previously undocumented ceramic types carried on board. This presentation tells the story of their investigation and the exciting process of archaeological discovery that extends well beyond the fieldwork phase. It also sheds light on a fascinating historical period that remains little documented in the archaeological record.
