It is with great dismay and sadness that we have learned of the use of a Nazi salute and expression during the plenary session of our peer archaeological society, the Society for Historical Archaeology.
As archaeologists, we are aware of the role archaeology has historically had in supporting nationalist, colonialist, and racist ideologies, including Nazism. As we undertake the intellectual labor of articulating a future for our field committed to social justice and equity, the use of such imagery and language must have no role. Especially this week, as events in the District of Columbia draw upon these symbols and ideologies, we must be clear that such behavior has no place in scholarly discourse. Archaeologists cannot be silent on these issues.
We affirm the Archaeological Institute of America’s commitment to an archaeology that broadens our vision, deepens our understanding, and expands our humanity.
