The Archaeological Institute of America is pleased to invite you to the inaugural Holton Lecture taking place on Tuesday, March 2 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST on Zoom. The event titled “Meet the Barbarians” will feature this year’s Felicia A. Holton Book Award winner, Dr. Peter Bogucki, author of The Barbarians (Reaktion Books).
“As an archaeologist who studies prehistoric societies north of the Alps, I want to tell the story of the non-literate peoples of this area to show that they did not appear suddenly when Greeks and Romans encountered them. They too have their own rich past. Landmark sites like Stonehenge and discoveries like the Iceman are part of a tapestry of fascinating prehistoric societies. The expanse from Ireland to the Eurasian steppes was home to people who left us several millennia of settlements and burials, just no written texts. This lecture will provide a glimpse into the silent Europeans who lived during the final millennium B.C.E., with a focus on three key sites: Biskupin in Poland, Hallstatt in Austria, and Corlea in Ireland.” – Dr. Bogucki
