A Call to Safeguard the Cultural Heritage of Syria

The Archaeological Institute of America views with grave concern the threat to the cultural heritage of Syria caused by the escalating violence there.  The archaeological sites, historical monuments and museums of Syria testify to the rich contributions its people have made to human cultural development from the Stone Age to the present.  These irreplaceable manifestations of the human spirit are now at risk of damage and loss.

We urge all parties to the present conflict and the international community to protect the cultural heritage of Syria, for the benefit of its people and all humanity, now and in the future.
