On January 8th, 2004, Jane Waldbaum, AIA President, sent the following letter to officials at US AID and the US Army Corps of Engineers requesting that the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage (ISBAH) be consulted and that cultural heritage resource management requirements be established for reconstruction projects entered into in Iraq and that qualified archaeologists approved by the ISBAH conduct any survey or salvage excavations undertaken in conjunction with these projects. The American Schools of Oriental Research (ASOR), the Society for American Archaeology (SAA), the American Association for Research in Baghdad (AARB), and the College Art Association (CAA) also endorsed these requests.
The AIA has now received responses from both U.S. AID and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The full text of their responses is available as a PDF download.
