AIANYS-NYSAA Joint Research Scholarship

Dear Colleague,

The New York Society of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIANYS) and the Metropolitan Chapter of the New York State Archaeological Association (NYSAA) are jointly launching a new $1,500 scholarship. This scholarship will be offered to a student in support of their archival, collections, or field-based research, scientific analysis or a public outreach project as long as the research or project is primarily focused on New York City-based archaeology.

To be eligible, the student must be pursuing a relevant course of study and research that involves the archaeology of New York City. We will accept applications from undergraduate or graduate students, enrolled in an accredited US or Canadian college or university, who are preparing a thesis or doctoral dissertation, or are engaged in independent research connected to the student’s academic studies. The $1,500 scholarship is not a salary and is not offered in lieu of a salary, as additional income or as a supplemental source of funding for a university or CRM-funded project. It is intended to support the costs associated with conducting the research project.

Applications will be accepted through November 15, 2024, with the recipient chosen by the middle of December. The funds will be made available to the student in the first quarter of the new calendar year or whenever the research project begins if later than the first quarter. The recipient will be selected by a committee comprised of two academic board members of AIANYS and two of the Metropolitan Chapter of the NYSAA. The online application can be accessed through this link: https://forms.gle/FnbgpLa1oA1XoAtU8

In addition to the usual contact information, the application calls for a project description not to exceed 500 words or less as well as a budget that identifies anticipated project-related expenses and a project timeline. We also request a transcript of the student’s academic record and a brief letter of endorsement from you or another professor or an academic advisor sponsoring the student. The faculty endorsement link can be found here: https://forms.gle/ZfNDQE5V7ikV1ccaA

We are grateful for your assistance in identifying qualifying students, alerting them to the availability of this scholarship and supporting their application.

Sincerely,
