The Fairfield Foundation hosted a public excavation for International Archaeology Day at a Revolutionary War reenactment event in Gloucester County on October 19, called the Battle of the Hook. Several hundred people stopped by the open excavations to hear an update on why they were digging, what they were finding, and what they had already found out about the landscape where the Battle of the Hook took place. A steady stream of children and adults also lent a hand to the excavations, either trying their hand at digging with shovels and trowels or taking a turn screening through the dirt to find artifacts. The event was a great family-oriented opportunity to spread the word about archaeology to the public, and the Fairfield Foundation can’t wait to host excavations at the Battle of the Hook again the future.
