On October 21st, the Niagara Peninsula Society of the AIA hosted an International Archaeology Day field trip to the Queenston Heights National Historical Site. Guides from the Friends of Fort George explained the history of the Battle of Queenston Heights and the War of 1812. Our walk brought us from the towering stone monument in honor of Major-General Sir Isaac Brock to the Landscape of Nations dedicated to the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) Confederacy and Indigenous allies that participated in the War of 1812. We are grateful to the Friends of Fort George and Monument Lab’s brilliant Field Trip exercise; their guidance helped us to reflect on the multiple individuals and groups who played important roles in local military history and the transforming nature of public commemoration.
