A Harvest of Pottery Sherds. Archaeological foreman and pottery technician, Ashur Ahmed Mohammed, surveys the “sherd yard” at the archaeological site of Abydos, Egypt, during the 2024 excavation season. Ashur is an archaeological foreman from the southern town of Quft (near Luxor), with expertise in identifying and processing pottery types for analysis. Excavated pottery at Abydos is still collected and catalogued in traditional palm-leaf baskets called “maqatif” from the Arabic for (lit.) “receptacles for gathering the harvest.” Photo by Wendy Doyon for Abydos Archaeology, https://abydos.org.
