The inaugural Sandra L. Church Lecture in archaeology will be given at the Santa Barbara Society of the Archaeological Institute of America located at UCSB on April 15, 2002. This is the second lectureship that Ms. Church has endowed for the Archaeological Institute of America. A longtime member and supporter of the AIA, she established the Albert H. Clayburgh Lecture at the Princeton Society in memory of her late husband in 1999.
“Bill” Clayburgh was a graduate of Princeton University, class of 1931. He had a distinguished sixty-five-year career in book production, representing a company that distributed the highest quality bookbinding cloths. He was widely known as a leader in his profession and was active in many trade associations related to his publishing career, including Typophiles, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Book Manufacturers Institute, and the Bookbinders Guild. He also supported and actively pursued cultural interests in literature, theater, opera, and ballet. During World War II he served in the Pacific theater as a lieutenant commander in the United States Navy.
Ms. Church has had a notable career as a Broadway actress. Now she resides in New York City and Santa Barbara where she devotes her time to painting.
