Project Description:

Program A: Restoring Porta Tuderte a 13th Century City Gate in San Gemini, Italy. Project involves the restoration and cleaning of Medieval stone masonry city gate structure.
Program B: Analysis and Restoration of Archeological Ceramics. The project involves working with artifacts coming from classical period excavations in Rome and the Umbria Region. Program: 2 weeks analyzing ceramics, 2 weeks cleaning and restoring archaeological pottery.
Program C: 2 weeks Historic Bookbinding and 2 weeks Conservation of Archival material. Field work in the Historic archives of the City of San Gemini. That contains material dating from 1398-1861.
Program D: Conservation and Restoration of Paper Archival documents from in the Historic archives of the City of San Gemini. That contains material dating from 1398-1861.
Program E: Traditional Painting in Italy: classes and workshops on materials, methods and conservation implications. Course covers: Fresco painting, Sgraffito, Panel painting and gilding, Oil painting on canvas, the methodology is based on the 15th Century “Libro dell’Arte” by Cenino Cenini.

Period(s) of Occupation: Program A: Porta Tuderte in San Gemin, construction ranges from the 13th Century to the 18th Century Program B: Archaeological Ceramics date are usually from the classical period 3rd C. – 3rd C. AD but they often include some older or more modern material. Program C: the Historic Archives of the City of San Gemini. That contains material dating from 1398-1861. Program D: the Historic Archives of the City of San Gemini. That contains material dating from 1398-1861. Program E: Traditional Painting in Italy: All material being handled is contemporary. The traditions being explored range in time from the 11thC. - 17th C.

Notes:
All programs include theoretical classes and hand-on workshops and field trips. Students have the option to take courses through the West Virginia University, Department of Art History and get university credit.

Project Size: 1-24 participants

Minimum Length of Stay for Volunteers: 4 Weeks

Minimum Age: 18

Experience Required: College Studies, Graduate Studies, or Experience in the field.

Housing only, accommodations vary please see website (all apartments have kitchens)
