Project Description:

SIU’s Archaeology Field School offers six weeks of full-time instruction in archaeological methods including basic survey, excavation, and laboratory techniques. In 2025, we will be investigating one or more early 19th-century farmsteads in what is now the Shawnee National Forest. These sites may have been occupied by some of the earliest Anglo-American settlers in Illinois and have been little studied to date.

The field school is based at SIU in Carbondale, IL. The sites we will be excavating are in several locations in nearby counties. Daily transportation to and from fieldwork locations will be provided, leaving the archaeology lab in Carbondale at 7:30 am and returning around 4:30 pm. However, we recommend that students have a car for getting around Carbondale as public transportation is limited.

Tuition (6 credits) + $50 course fee for materials is $1,979 for undergraduates. Graduate tuition is higher. In-state and out-of-state students pay the same tuition rates.
