On Saturday, October 20, the Archaeology Program and the Archaeology Student Colloquium at The College of Wooster held the fourteenth annual Archaeology Day. This year the event was held in conjunction with National Archaeology Day and the AIA-Oberlin/Wooster Society. Most activities took place in the lobby of Lowry Center, located at 1189 Beall Ave., across the street from the College library. The events included demonstrations of flint knapping, and the use of a transit for taking measurements and elevations. In addition, artifacts from sites in Ohio and Jordan were on display, along with casts of fossilized humans that depict the origin and evolution of our species. Activities for children included piecing together broken pots, and “cave painting” on cardboard walls. There were informational booths about the work of the Wayne County Cemetery Preservation Society and the Wayne County Historical Society. Prof. Olivia Navarro-Farr (Assistant Prof. of Archaeology and Anthropology at the College of Wooster) talked about her discovery of the tomb of a Mayan queen in Guatemala this past summer. Books and magazines about archaeology were available for purchase.
