A gift to the Archaeological Institute of America helps support the Institute’s many exciting programs and initiatives in the areas of outreach, education, and site preservation. Your donation is also critical to the continued success of the AIA’s nationwide events as well as the future of archaeological professionals in the field.

Support the AIA by signing up for the online automatic giving program. Your consistent gifts, made monthly, quarterly or annually can be designated for the Annual Fund, Site Preservation or the program of your choice. Automatic gifts make your dollars work harder for the AIA, and the programs and initiatives you feel passionately about, by cutting down the administrative costs associated with paper appeals. If you are 70 ½ or older and own an IRA, you may make a direct transfer of all or some of your annual required minimum distribution (RMD) obligation to benefit archaeology without including the withdrawal in your adjusted gross income. A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) from your IRA to the AIA is a tax-efficient way of making a donation.
So if you need to take a mandatory IRA distribution, why not support archaeological research, education, and preservation and receive a tax break at the same time? To get started, contact your IRA provider and tell them you would like to initiate a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to the Archaeological Institute of America, located at 44 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108. If helpful to you, we are happy to provide you with a sample letter you can customize and send to your IRA provider to initiate a QCD. Please contact Elizabeth Bailey, Director of Development at ebailey@archaeological.org to request a letter.
A gift of appreciated stock is a convenient way to support the AIA. Donating appreciated stock avoids the capital gains tax on any growth in the value of the stock since you bought it. You must have owned the stock for at least a year to qualify for this significant tax advantage. Gifts of appreciated stock are deductible in one year up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. Any excess can generally be carried forward and deducted over as many as five subsequent years.
Example: If you purchased stock many years ago for $2,000 and it is now worth $20,000, an outright gift of the stock to the AIA would result in a charitable deduction of $20,000. In addition, there is no capital gains tax on the $18,000 of appreciation.
If you are ready to make a gift to the AIA through the transfer of stock, please contact us so we can work together to fill out our Stock Donation Form. Once we have the necessary information from you, you will receive the information necessary to make the transfer. Contacting us with your information provides required notice to the AIA before the transfer to ensure appropriate donor acknowledgment and allocation.
Please contact Elizabeth Bailey, Director of Development at ebailey@archaeological.org or 857-305-9352 about this method of donating to the AIA.
Many employers will match charitable contributions made by their employees, doubling your impact on the AIA. Please check with your Human Resources Department to find out if your employer will match your gift. Our Development Department will be happy to provide you or your employer with any necessary documentation to facilitate your matching gift.
