In Memoriam: Robert G. Ousterhout, Ph.D.

The AIA is saddened to announce the passing of Robert (Bob) G. Ousterhout, Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania and a long-time member of the AIA. Dr. Ousterhout passed away on April 25, 2023.

Bob, as he was known amongst friends and colleagues, was one of the leading experts on Byzantine studies. Some of his noteworthy publications include Master Builders of Byzantium (1999), Visualizing Community: Art, Material Culture, and Settlement in Byzantine Cappadocia (2017), and Eastern Medieval Architecture: The Building Traditions of Byzantium and Neighboring Lands (2019), for which the Medieval Academy of America awarded him the 2021 Haskins Medal.

Robert’s monumental work has changed the field for years to come. His teachings have left a strong impact on his students, and he will be dearly missed. We offer our deepest condolences to Robert’s family, friends, students, and colleagues.
