In observance of International Archaeology Day 2013, the Historical Commission and the Historical Society in Wayland, Massachusetts presented a lecture in entitled: “Wayland Uncovered: Archaeological Evidence of Our First Residents”. This lecture was part of a year long celebration of Wayland’s 375th anniversary of settlement in 1638. Native Americans first came into the Wayland area after the the glacier receded about 12,000 years ago. There have been five excavations of pre-contact sites since 1978. Radiocarbon dates gathered in these excavations show artifacts represent periods going back 8000 years. The lecture was presented by Tonya Largy with 85 participants in attendance.
