The Archaeological Institute of America is happy to announce that the National Park Service (NPS) joined this week as an official Collaborating Organization for National Archaeology Day 2012. As written in its mission statement, “The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage.” Over 73,000 known prehistoric and historic archaeological sites found in nearly 400 national parks are maintained and interpreted by the NPS. As stewards and educators, the NPS is excited to work with the AIA and to coordinate archaeological interpretive programs in NPS regions and parks for October 20, 2012.
While several individual National Parks participated in the first National Archaeology in 2011, this year’s national level partnership is expected to generate many new events for October 2012.
