Over 100 members of the public turned out for the Plymouth Antiquarian Society’s free public tour of Burial Hill presented in conjunction with International Archeological Day. Karin Goldstein of Plimoth Plantation and David Landon of the Fiske Center for Archeological Research at the University of Massachusetts/Boston shared details of a major new project, the Plymouth Colony Archeological Survey, which will gather data on significant local sites to provide a comprehensive historical resource for the 400th anniversary of Plymouth’s settlement in 2020. Tour participants explored the ancient burying ground, learned about new methods of investigating history in the ground, including non-destructive geophysical remote sensing and mapping techniques, and traced potential areas where remains of Pilgrim era structures may still exist below ground.
