The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park planned to host a Special Archaeological Tours of Barrio de Tubac and Tumacácori Mission on October 13, 2013, for International Archaeology Day. Philip Halpenny and Gwen Griffin led the tour of the Spanish colonial archaeological site south of the Presidio that preserves the remains of the original 1752 Tubac town site. The Archaeological Conservancy protects the site and participants were asked to sign ‘An Acknowledgement of Risk Factors’ before entering. However, the government shutdown hampered plans to tour Tumacacori National Park, Arizona’s oldest mission site, which they did not have access to. However, they had more time at Barrio de Tubac and were able to make the tour slightly longer and more relaxed. No one canceled and all of the 17 participants seemed to still enjoy the tour.
